Dr. Juhnke is the Director of the Counselor Education and Supervision Doctoral Program at The University of Texas at San Antonio.  Prior to joining the UTSA faculty in August of 2004, Dr. Juhnke was a Professor at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he also served as Director of the Nicholas A. Vacc Counseling and Consulting Clinic and Marriage and Family Coordinator.

Dr. Juhnke is a former President of The International Association for Addictions and Offender Counseling and a former President of The Association for Assessment in Counseling.  He served as Editor of The Journal for Addictions & Offender Counseling from 1995 to 1998 and is a current member of The JAOC Editorial Review Board.  Dr. Juhnke also served as Co-Chair of The American Counseling Association’s Council of Journal Editors.

Dr. Juhnke’s most recent book was co-edited with Dr. Virginia Kelly.  The book is titled, “Critical Incidents in Addictions Counseling” and was published by ACA Press in 2005.  He has authored two previous books, Substance Abuse Assessment:  A Handbook For Mental Health Professionals” and Addressing School Violence:  Practical Strategies & Interventions", and is currently coauthoring a family addictions text with Dr. Bryce Hagedorn.  He has authored or coauthored 27 refereed journal articles, six book chapters, and over 25 scholarly papers and articles (ERIC Digests, Mental Measurement Yearbook Reviews).  He has also secured grant awards in excess of $250,000—including a grant titled, “Violence Reduction Interventions for Washington, DC Schools”.

In 2003 Dr. Juhnke was the recipient of two national research awards including the American Counseling Association’s Ralph F. Berdie Research Award and The International Association of Addictions and Offenders Counselors’ Journal of Addictions & Offender Research Award.  Dr. Juhnke’s three clinical and research strands:  addictions counseling and assessment, marriage and family counseling, and life-threatening behaviors (i.e., violence and suicide) coalesce into his research agenda.

Dr. Juhnke has a number of grant, research, and scholarly projects recently completed or underway with UTSA faculty and students.  For example, Dr. Juhnke, Dr. Coll, and doctoral student Scott Peters completed and submitted an interview with Dr. Frank Miller of the SASSI Institute.  Drs. Juhnke, Thelma Duffey, and Marcheta Evans are gathering research data related to faculty relocation.  Concomitantly, Dr. Juhnke is investigating counselor education department chair demographics and leadership training with Drs. Marcheta Evans, Ken Coll, Bryce Hagedorn, Alan Hovestadt, and Virginia Kelly, along with Dr. Juhnke's graduate research assistant and doctoral student Ms. Sally Chilson.
